Travis to celebrate C-17 milestone Published Feb. 23, 2006 By 020601 TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The 60th Air Mobility Wing invites local media representatives to attend a special Major Join ceremony March 3 at the Boeing Plant in Long Beach, Calif., for Travis’ first C-17 Globemaster III. The major join, which is when the fuselage of the C-17 is joined with the nose of the aircraft, is a major milestone in the development of the C-17 aircraft. The C-17 Globemaster III is the nation’s newest airlifter and allows the military to land people and supplies anywhere anytime. It also brings a new, modern capability that is in line with the varying Air Mobility Command missions. Travis is scheduled to receive the first of 13 C-17s in the August timeframe. The aircraft will greatly improve Travis’ ability to continue its mission of providing rapid air mobility support around the world. This is a one-day trip. Media representatives attending will be flown to the facility for the ceremony and back to Travis. However, due to Travis’ mission requirements, the March 3 date may fluctuate.
