Carry Our Nation’s Flag Proudly Published May 13, 2010 By Col. James Vechery 60th Air Mobility Wing TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE,Calif. -- Every so often, I am reminded of what it means to be an Airman in today's Air Force ... what it means to step up and carry our nation's flag. It is not an easy job, it is not always glamorous and the fact is we are a nation at war. However, when we volunteered, we all swore an oath in front of our flag to defend this country and our Constitution with our life if necessary. I challenge you each day to remember that oath and be a shining example of America's brilliance, courage and dedication. We carry our flag across the world in the name of peace and, when necessary, into battle -- it flies proudly on the tail of each and every military aircraft. It even flies in space, ever vigilant in quiet solitude. Our country depends on us to ensure "Old Glory" continues to fly freely in the same manner in which we live. For that, America is grateful. There are times I am fortunate enough to represent you and the thousands of Team Travis family members to our community partners. It is clear they appreciate you and are proud of your service. Just last week, I had the honor of attending the Solano County Board of Supervisors meeting with the 615th Contingency Response Wing commander, Col. John Lipinski. The Board presented us Resolution 2010-112, proclaiming May as National Military Appreciation Month in Solano County. The entire resolution is included in this week's Tailwind, but here is a short piece of the resolution: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Solano County Board of Supervisors does hereby declare the month of May as a special time to show appreciation for our Military and encourages all citizens to show gratitude by the appropriation display of flags and ribbons during this designated period. All over our great country, people are pausing to celebrate the dedication and sacrifice members of the Armed Forces give voluntarily. From this resolution, it is clear our local community partners are celebrating too. From the Dixon May Fair this past weekend to Vacaville's Fiesta Days at the end of the month to the many Memorial Day remembrances around the area, the Travis family is welcomed, honored and celebrated in Solano County. With Memorial Day right around the corner, we will all take a moment to pause and remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their story of courage and determination has been told and their legacy endures. Now that challenge is on your shoulders as we carry our nation's flag to ensure future generations enjoy the same freedoms we have today. Keep this in mind as you go about your day-to-day work this month. Our community is looking to you, watching you and trusting you. However, we must earn that trust every day and continue to lead this great nation by our example. I can think of 1,300 Team Travis members deployed around the world right now who want you to be that example as they deliver Air Power for this nation. As you serve, I challenge you to carry our nation's flag with pride and honor!
