There are events in our military history that define each generation of warriors. This past week marked the 68th anniversary of the attacks on military installations in Hawaii. Following the surprise attacks Dec. 7, 1941, our nation spurred into action to defend freedom not just for our country, but for the entire world. "A day which will live in infamy" remains a day to remember the numerous brave acts and sacrifices of that fateful morning.

The events of Dec. 7, 1941, tested our nation's will to fight and set the United States on a course for war. It is a day we celebrate the bravery of ordinary men and women. They stood in the face of tragedy with fortitude and courage. We also honor the 2,345 military men and women who gave their last full measure while serving the nation. Their service serves as a poignant reminder for all who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our way of life.

Although we did not expect history to repeat itself, the terrorist attacks on 9/11 also thrust our forces into action. Similar to events in 1941, the surprise attacks challenged our national resolve and provoked the United States to respond and, once again, our adversaries underestimated our willingness and ability to fight -- a fight we are committed to win.

After nearly a decade of combat operations over foreign skies and countless battlefields, the current generation of warriors has not given up the fight. Our efforts have yielded extraordinary results in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have changed the lives of oppressed millions and set them on a path to live in freedom.

In his recent address to the nation, President Barack Obama pledged more forces to support ongoing missions in Operation Enduring Freedom. Our fighting men and women stand ready to answer that call. Since World War II, our Air Force has transformed into the most powerful force the world has ever seen, and as World War II produced the "greatest generation," today's warrior Airmen continue to build a legacy of dedication and greatness. In every struggle and challenge, American Airmen remain all in!
