Service and giving Published Nov. 24, 2009 By AAFES By Army and Air Force Exchange Service TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- With a mission to provide quality goods and services at competitively low prices and generate earnings to support Services' programs, the dual benefit AAFES provides military families at Travis goes far beyond the clothes, electronics and snacks on shelves. Shoppers who exercise their exchange benefit at the Base Exchange, online at www.aafes.com or over the phone through the Exchange Catalog actually help make the military community a better place to live and work. In fact, purchases made by Airmen at the BX, Shoppette and other AAFES activities at Travis AFB last year generated a dividend of $565,993. These funds are critical to Air Force Services' ability to enhance local programs and facilities including Travis' Aquatic Center, Bowling Center and Youth Center to name a few. Funds provided through Exchange revenues help build many Services facilities to include the existing Delta Breeze and The Family Camp. Playground equipment and upgrades to child care facilities have also benefited from the dividends provided by AAFES. The Air Force distributes its AAFES dividends to each installation using AAFES local sales figures. A part of every sales dollar goes to Travis. Beyond improving quality of life programs, the exchange benefit also helps military shoppers find the best value for their dollar. At the front line of this effort is the BX's Market Price Coordinator Amanda Simons. "Amanda's main duty is to compare the prices of key items with local competition," said Lee Chung, AAFES General Manager. "Whether shopping for an HDTV, clothes, jewelry or even gas, she helps ensure that our prices are comparable, if not lower, than the competition." Because shoppers may need a little more time to pay for all of the items on this year's holiday shopping list, the BX has revamped its layaway program. Clothing, handbags and shoes are still eligible for 30-day layaway, but full payment on many other categories can be put off for up to 60 days," said Ms. Chung. Fine jewelry can be put on layaway for up to 120 days at the BX. As you can see, the Travis Exchange has a lot 'in store' for Air Force Families this year. Please take a moment this holiday season to stop by, shop, save and give back to your military community.
