Freedom isn’t free Published Sept. 14, 2009 By Col. Jim Vechery 60th Air Mobility Wing commander TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Wow, these past two weeks have been busy! We completed our flyaway exercise to Alpena, Mich., in preparation for our upcoming Operational Readiness Inspection and we are quickly approaching the conclusion of Air Force Week Sacramento. I am extremely impressed with the unwavering commitment and amazing attitudes you all display to ensure these important tasks were accomplished in excellent fashion. You truly showcased Team Travis - America's First Choice! Airpower! As Air Force Week winds down, please take a moment to reflect and remember the events eight years ago on Sept. 11 that changed the course of our nation forever. I can't help but ponder the many sacrifices great Americans have made throughout the years, many made the ultimate sacrifice. "Just last week, while many of you were deployed supporting our Operational Readiness Exercise and others were anxiously preparing for Air Force Week, a dignified transfer ceremony was held here at Travis. Captain John L. Hallett III, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash., died from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle Aug. 25. Travis served as one of the last stops on Captain Hallett's final journey home. As we honored Captain Hallett and his wonderful family, we were reminded that we are still very much a nation at war. While our day-to-day tasks and challenges evolve and change, our primary mission as an Air Force remains the same - fly, flight and win in air, space and cyberspace. As you go about your daily tasks, please take a moment to remember those who paid the ultimate price while renewing your commitment to the freedom of our great nation. That commitment will ensure that Team Travis continues to accomplish our mission with excellence. Our nation is counting on you and I know you will deliver!
