Police week time to reflect, appreciate Published May 10, 2013 By Master Sgt. Tyler Brown 60th Security Forces Squadron TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- Every one of us has identified a prominent person in our life we could call a hero. This hero could be a close family member, friend, neighbor or even a professional first responder. This hero may have been very open with their actions and could have ended up on the evening news. There are other heroes that are behind the scenes. They work late shifts, holidays and weekends. Around the clock, they serve their community and keep the peace. On Oct. 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-726, which designates May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of federal, state, and municipal officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. The law also directed the officials of the government to display at half-staff the flag of the United States on all government buildings. The calendar week during which May 15 occurs is designated as Police Week, in recognition of the service given by the men and women who, night and day, stand guard in our midst to protect us through enforcement of our laws. Public Law 87-726 went on to authorize the governments of the states and communities and the people of the United States to observe such day and week with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including the display of the U.S. at half staff. This year the 60th Security Forces Squadron is hosting several events throughout the week to commemorate Police Week. The week caps off with an Air Force Excellence in Competition shooting match featuring the M16A2 rifle and the M9 pistol. The overall objective is to provide a venue for improvement pistol and rifle marksmanship skills and promote friendly competition while strengthening camaraderie. In addition, this competition will give Air Force personnel a chance to win the Bronze Badge. On behalf of the 60th SFS we hope to see you at the events, honoring those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in serving their local and Air Force communities.
