Dorm buildings 1330 and 1307 on Travis are currently undergoing serious renovations from the ground up as part of the Dorm Master Plan Assessment.

Those who have driven out the back gate may have noticed the half-gutted out building, dorm 1330, that has yet to complete demolition. However, from the demise of the old dorms will rise newly renovated buildings equipped with new layout plans to further improve the quality of life for Airmen.

According to Tech. Sgt. Reno Cruz, NCO in charge military Airman dorm leader, based off the DMP assessment, it was cheaper to build new dorms rather than sustain 1330 and 1307, which were both constructed in 1954 and underwent renovations in the 90s.

The project, called Dorms 4 Airmen is projected to provide a four person module with four private bedrooms, private baths, a shared kitchen with a washer and dryer, and a common living room, Cruz said. The project is expected to be completed in November.

These developments differ from the current layout by providing Airmen more space that is not shared with an entire floor of dorm residents such as the laundry room, kitchen and community areas.

"Quality of life will dramatically increase," Cruz said. "Not only are we receiving independent bathrooms, more kitchen space and BBQ areas, but also new volleyball and basketball courts."

The concept of improving the resident area of single Airmen has come quite a way since Cruz was in the dorms.

"We were required to share a room with one other Airman and the bathroom was shared with three others," he said.

The dorm managers, who have been planning this project since 2011, are excited to witness the completion of the project and the impact it will have on the Airmen.

"Our mission at unaccompanied housing is to take care of our Airmen and their quality of life," Cruz said. "We are very excited for the new Dorms 4 Airmen project."
