A healthy potluck

Have you ever noticed how often we are bombarded with unhealthy food options on a daily basis? Family gatherings, birthday celebrations, work functions - it seems like there is always a reason to indulge. It can be hard to stay on track with your nutrition goals when unhealthy options are always around.

Just like most squadrons on base, the 60th Aerospace Medicine Squadron participated in Wingman Day's physical pillar Aug. 23 by enjoying the fun run at Travisville Park and playing sports afterward. All that activity works up the appetite so they knew they would plan a potluck.

"Since this pillar was focused on our physical health, we knew we had to have a healthy spin on the foods we brought," said Col. Karen Heupel, 60th AMDS squadron commander. "Squadron members loved the idea and had a little contest to see which flight could bring the most creative and healthy dish."

Instead of the traditional burger burn, 60th AMDS members served sandwiches on whole wheat bread, lots of fruit and vegetable salads and healthier desserts made with oatmeal and applesauce instead of butter.

"Not only were their dishes healthy and delicious, members had fun trying new recipes," Heupel said.

If you notice that you, too, are bombarded by social events that lead you to get off track with your nutrition goals, suggest having a healthy potluck at your next event. For more information, call the HAWC at 424-4292.
