BBC hosts patriotic parade Published June 29, 2012 By Tyler Grimes 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- With summer now in full swing and Independence Day right around the corner, Balfour Beatty Communities held the first Bling Your Bike, Trike or Stroller Parade June 22 at its community center. Travis residence paid respect to Old Glory by decorating their bicycles, wagons and strollers and donning patriotic attire. In addition to paying respect to the red, white and blue, the employees of BBC took this event as an opportunity to focus on the benefits of biking during the summer months. "We want our residents to come out now that school's out, have some fun and learn some bicycle safety tips to keep our kids safe while they're riding around on base," said Julie Brousseau, BBC lifeworks coordinator. "We're also going to focus on the environmental and health benefits of bicycling versus taking cars on short trips." By opting to bike rather than drive, Brousseau says people can save money on gas and increase their physical fitness by staying active. Bicyclists also help the environment by not contributing to air pollution and smog. Beyond explaining the advantages of biking, this event was an opportunity to bring dependents together to support a common cause and make some introductions, she said. "This is a way to generate a sense of community and show our commitment to Travis - (what BBC) is all about," she said. "Getting some of the spouses to meet each other and maybe get play groups together so the kids can make new friends." For friends Amber Maples and Karen Sanders, the parade gave them a chance for their children to learn about their freedom. "We just thought it would be a lot of fun for the kids and teach them about the importance of being patriotic by supporting our families," Maples said. "It's really important, especially being a military family," Sanders added. For more information on upcoming events and activities hosted by the BBC call 207-3376.
