The military lifestyle is a constantly changing one. The frequent moves, deployments and job changes can be difficult for many families.

The Travis Phoenix Spouse Program, offered through the Airman and Family Readiness Center, is a formal unit program that offers informal peer-to-peer support to families that might be feeling the stress from these issues.

This week, the AFRC and Tailwind have highlighted the Phoenix Spouse Program coordinator.

Full name: Robert Nesbitt

Unit Assigned: 60th Air Mobility Wing Airman and Family Readiness Center

How long have you been the coordinator: Since May 2008

What is the Phoenix Spouse Program?
The Phoenix Spouse Program is a resource to enhance unit family readiness and operates within a military framework. The chain of command and its "chain of communication" work much in the same way. It allows for effective communication and for issues to be effectively resolved at the lowest level.

What are some of the main benefits of this program?
It allows family awareness in accessing installation and community resources and improved quality of life for unit families. Families are better prepared for separation and have an increased sense of unit caring and increased participation in unit and wing activities.

How would someone become involved in the program, what are the requirements?
Interested individuals are first interviewed, chosen and then appointed by the unit commander. They will then attend initial training at the AFRC and continue on with supplemental training. Each Phoenix Spouse must serve a minimum two-year commitment.

Why is this program important?
It promotes individual, family and unit readiness. Another important aspect of the program is that it welcomes unit newcomers. Feeling accepted starts from the beginning when you first get here. The program works as a bridge between families and their units, it allows folks to be more proactive with people in their squadron and create that social networking for families.

What is the most rewarding part for you?
Dealing with really motivated, empathetic people who help others when they really need that support.
