Recycling contest celebrates Earth Day 2006 Published March 10, 2006 By Dolores Tiburcio 60th Civil Engineer Squadron recycling program manager TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- To promote active recycling, the wing’s environmental flight office is turning recyclable trash into a valuable commodity. From March 17 through April 14, the environmental flight office will conduct its ninth annual recycling contest in honor of Travis’ Earth Day 2006 program. The goal of the contest is to reduce solid waste and make money for booster clubs, households and schools. Also, the contest promotes a positive attitude toward recycling. Squadrons may enter an unlimited number of teams, each with a maximum of 10 people [counting the captain]. Military family housing, dorm residents and local Travis schools are also eligible to enter teams. Teams will collect and redeem California Refund Value aluminum cans; CRV glass bottles; CRV plastic bottles; and scrap glass to include brown, green and clear bottles and jars. The current market is paying $1.24 per pound for aluminum cans, 69 cents per pound for polyethylene terephyhalate plastic and 8.1 cents per pound for scrap glass. Items may be redeemed at the base recycling center Lot 741 on Dixon Avenue. Items that are redeemed will be weighed and recorded on an official tally sheet. Team captains are responsible for submitting their tally sheets to the environmental flight office so the totals can be tracked through April 14 when the contest ends. The contest registration form will be distributed via e-mail to each squadron’s recycling monitor. It can be completed and faxed to 424-5105, [attention Ms. Cassidy], returned to the e-mail address on the form or hand-carried to the environmental flight office in Bldg. 570. Deadline to register is March 17. Prizes will be awarded to first and second place teams that recycle the most material [weight] and those that turn in the highest dollar amount. The same criteria will be used for the highest individual awards. Prizes First place teams [most weight and most money]: each team member receives a fleece jacket, Earth Day t-shirt and tote bag. All items are designed with Earth Day/Travis logo, made from 100-percent recycled material. Second place teams: Each team member receives an Earth Day t-shirt and tote bag. All items are designed with Earth Day/Travis logo, made from 100-percent recycled material. Individual winners for most weight and for most money collected receive $25 gift certificate donated by Army and Air Force Exchange Services, a fleece vest with Earth Day logo, Earth Day t-shirt and tote bag. In addition to winning prizes, teams can keep the money they earn by recycling. Teams will have the option of donating the money to their squadron booster club or a charitable organization, or splitting it among their members.
