911: Phoning for emergencies at Travis

The ever-changing worlds of transportation and communication — and the improvements in technology behind them — have enabled us to be a very mobile workforce.

Unfortunately, these very same advances, coupled with California’s intra- and interstate highway system has a downside that underscores the problem of the Travis Team’s “mobile warriors” not being aware of their surroundings at all times.

This has created some challenges for those trying to respond in an emergency situation. To access an emergency dispatch at Travis, including the 60th Security Forces Squadron Fire/Rescue or Emergency personnel from David Grant USAF Medical Center, there are some distinct differences Travis members need to be aware of and program into their cellular devices.

For those who are calling from a regular on-base telephone at Travis — whether at home or in the office — dial 911. However, Travis members who are calling on a cellular device from within a local area — such as in Solano County on a local account should dial 424-4911.

Finally, those who are calling on a cellular device from an out-of-area location [another county or on a cell phone account registered under a different area code] should dial 1-707-424-4911.

The Emergency Services department at DGMC strongly recommends Travis members to pre-program these three key numbers into all of their personal communication devices.

Additionally, it’s important to maintain situational awareness when making a call for emergency services.

For example, if an individual’s car has broken down along Interstate 80, I-680, I-5 or Highway 99, it’s helpful for emergency responders to know where he or she is, either by county location or major towns or cities nearby. It doesn’t do any good if a call is handled by a 911 call center in Fairfield when the individual is in Fresno.
