Travis Airman & Family Readiness Center offers volunteer opportunities Published Oct. 30, 2019 By Senior Airman Jonathon Carnell 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – People often affiliate the Airman and Family Readiness Center at Travis Air Force Base with a variety of programs and tools to help military families adapt to the unique challenges of military life; however, not everyone is aware that the center also runs the base’s largest volunteer program. “The volunteer program assists with recruiting and placing prospective volunteers in areas of their desired interests,” said Teneika Mckoy, 60th Force Support Squadron community readiness specialist. “By placing candidates at sites of their interest, it allows volunteers to flourish, gain marketable skills, network, all while contributing to their community.” The flexibility of the volunteer program can be arranged around the volunteer’s schedule. Any and all help is much appreciated, Mckoy said. “There are over 350 active volunteers on Travis Air Force Base,” Mckoy said. “We have many opportunities for volunteers and are always looking for assistance.” Making the community a better place is important to Jessica Moser, key spouse for the 660th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. She said getting involved with the base was a high priority for her. Her goal was to educate families about resources the base provides. “I feel a sense of completion when a project comes to life,” Moser said. “A child’s smile when they get to pick out their school supplies knowing that it has saved his or her parents money. The smile from a service member who is about to deploy and received a hot cup of coffee or a handmade blanket while he awaits his long flight.” Moser said it is exciting when a local or national organization wants to connect and offer a resource to our military families. “It has never been an individual effort,” Moser said. “There is always someone helping behind the scenes, from my family, to my husband’s squadron, to the spouses club, to the non-profits who work so hard to take care of our military families. “I was able to feel that self-satisfaction from being able to contribute and bring a team together to help out and give back to our military community,” Moser said. Mckoy said making a big difference does not always require a big commitment. It can be as simple as giving 15 minutes of one’s time.
