Travis Air Force Base, California, is scheduled to host the Travis Triathlon Aug. 22 beginning and ending at the Aquatic Center.

The triathlon will involve a 500-meter swim, 12-mile bike ride and a 5K run.

"A triathlon is a great challenge and is not just rich in physical benefits, but mentally and spiritually and socially, as well," said Staff Sgt. Irene Salas, 60th Force Support Squadron fitness program manager. "Our triathlon is not so much a competition against other people, but a test to see how far your heart can go."

The cost to participate is $25 per person. Free heart rate monitors will be given to the first 10 participants and the first 30 participants will receive a T-shirt.

"(The goal of the triathlon is to) support Travis' mission readiness and espirit de corps by enhancing physical and mental fitness," Salas said. "(The money raised) will go toward funding future fitness events."

Physical fitness is important to being mission ready Airmen.

"Fitness is a lifestyle, not a TDY," said Master Sgt. Martin Tanedo, 60th Force Support Squadron fitness section chief. "You can't just wake up from a couch potato routine and participate tomorrow. Pursuing a triathlon needs discipline, time management, self-motivation, determination and courage. For all those who are already living the fitness lifestyle but have not registered yet, inspire those around you or set an example for someone to elevate their fitness to the next level... Your best reward is simply making a positive change in their life and nothing can match that."
