Responders to use new route Published May 29, 2015 By Nick Christensen 60th Civil Engineer Squadron TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Travis Fire Emergency Services Flight would like to remind all Travis personnel to be aware of the surroundings when emergency vehicles are present. Travis FES responds around the clock to a variety of emergencies, including structural, medical, aircraft, motor vehicle accidents and hazardous materials incidents. It is important that all base personnel pull over and yield the right of way when FES crews have their emergency lights flashing. With a daily base population of more than 25,000 people, roads can become congested. FES requests that the base populace pay particular attention to emergency crews responding from Fire Station two, located at the intersection of Travis Avenue and 1st Street. This is a high traffic area and the location of the installation's busiest fire station. Starting this month, construction projects on 1st Street will result in Fire Station two personnel responding from an alternate response route behind the Firestone building and exiting to/from Broadway Street. Please be aware of this change and be on the lookout for responders coming from the Firestone parking lot area. A couple of reminders: AFI 91-207 2.3.1 states: Installations located in the U.S. will adopt and enforce the state laws regarding standards for motor vehicles in traffic as described in Department of Defense Directive (DoDD) 5525.4, Enforcement of State Laws on DoD Installations. California Vehicle Code Section 21806 Section (a) (1) states: the driver shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to the right-hand edge or curb of the highway, clear of any intersection, and thereupon shall stop and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed. Failure to comply can result in a monetary fine as well as loss of base driving privileges.
