Thirteen Travis honorary commanders toured the 60th Medical Group at David Grant USAF Medical Center May 15 to gain a better understanding of the Air Force's mission at Travis Air Force Base, California.

The honorary commander program is designed to integrate civic leaders from the local community into the military for a two-year term.

"I feel honored to be an honorary commander," said Gregory Boyko, 60th MDG Honorary Commander. "It's an awesome opportunity and a very valuable experience."

The tour began with a mission brief by Col. Matthew Wonnacott, 60th MDG deputy commander, as he explained out the overall mission of the hospital and gave the honorary commanders insight on what they would see throughout the day.

After the briefing, the honorary commanders visited the Hemodialysis clinic and catheter lab where the HCCs learned the intricacies behind both.

"As a nurse, it was very interesting to learn about the hospital and the Airmen," said Lois Cross, 60th MDOS HCC and Sutter Health nurse. "It was impressive learning how they train, their readiness mission and how the Airmen can go anywhere at any time."

The tour also included an in-depth look into the hyperbaric chamber, Solano County's largest 24/7 chamber. The tour of the chamber highlighted hyperbaric oxygen therapy and advanced wound care.

Other stops on the tour included the Clinical Investigation Facility, the Joint Radiation Oncology Center and the simulation center before concluding at Fisher House II.

"The tour was fascinating," Boyko said. "I knew DGMC was a great hospital, but now I know more about what it does, the logistics behind it and what has accomplished. I really look forward to working with Col. (Rawson) Wood."
