Travis Air Force Base will observe National Police Week with several activities on base May 11 to 15 including a fitness challenge, 5K race, shooting competition and retreat ceremony.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund website, National Police Week is a weeklong observance to honor law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The week of remembrance started in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date fell as Police Week.

"Police Week is a way for us as law enforcement officers to honor officers who were killed or wounded in the line of duty," said Tech. Sgt. Cedric Holliman, 60th Security Forces Squadron NCOIC of mobility. "It's important that we don't forget all those who came before us, those who sacrificed their lives doing the job."

Staff Sgt. Juan Gonzalez, 60th SFS standardization evaluation evaluator, echoed Holliman's sentiments.

"It's vital we recognize our fellow officers who put their lives on the line for others ... which is something many people may take for granted," Gonzalez said. "Officers are always putting their lives on the line."

Festivities begin at Travis May 11 at 8 a.m., with a static display featuring the 60th SFS emergency services team and their equipment, as well as military working dog demonstrations at the Base Exchange. Police Week will also feature a bowling tournament and a timed fitness challenge requiring four-person teams to conquer 10 obstacles.

Holliman, a native of Mineral Wells, Texas, said Police Week will provide the community an excellent opportunity to interact with security forces members.

"The public can ask questions, handle some of the equipment that we use and just interact with us," Holliman said. "Police Week gives us an opportunity to showcase what we do on a day-to-day basis. It will also allow us to interact with the community, show our personal side and help build camaraderie."

Everyone is highly encouraged to take part in Police Week events, said Gonzalez, a native of Brownsville, Texas.

"I encourage everyone to come out and take part," Gonzalez said. "Especially in the fitness challenge because it'll be a great opportunity to work on team building, increase morale and network."
