The deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for energy, Kevin Geiss, visited July 24 at Travis to learn about global mobility and the dynamic, diverse mission.

Geiss is responsible for providing oversight and direction for all matters pertaining to the formulation, review and execution of plans, policies, programs and budgets for the effective and efficient use of energy to support the global Air Force mission.

During his visit, he met with control tower, radar approach control and critical care air transport teams and other agencies as well as experienced the C-17 Globemaster III simulator.

Geiss was briefed about installation safety, mission accomplishment, energy, logistics and fuel efficiency initiatives.

"There's plenty of opportunity to save energy and fuel, but we need to make sure that the end goal is completing the mission and not cut from reliability and safety," Giess said. "I love Air Mobility Command bases, I go where the most energy and fuel is spent. AMC has really been the leader in the fuel saving initiative, even winning awards for the past years."

Geiss said there is still a lot of work to be done, but the Air Force is on its way with Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st century.

"The bottom line is (if) we save fuel, we save money," he said.
