TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – Starting on June 6, Collins Drive west of Burgan Boulevard, will be closed for repairs to fix the failed drainages at the Duck Pond that have begun to erode the existing road. During this road closure, Travis residents will have to use the north entrance to access the Duck Pond as the road will be closed, affecting the parking lot to the south side as well.

In December 2014, the Duck Pond running path collapsed because of a failed corrugated metal pipe, located just north of the pond, directly where patrons run and walk.

In 2015, the 60th Civil Engineer Squadron identified an additional sink hole on the south side of the duck pond, along the retaining wall, also due to a failed section of CMP. Further investigation revealed that the CMP extended across Collins Drive and connected to reinforced concrete pipe.

In order to minimize the effect to the community, the repairs to the south sinkhole were delayed until after the school year ended.  The scope of the project includes replacing the CMP with RCP repairs to Collins Drive, and repair the sidewalk and retaining wall that will be damaged during construction.  The project will take approximately four weeks to complete.

As part of the funded repair project, a decorative fence will be installed along the sinkhole and the jogging path will be widened. This will provide a safe jogging environment for base personnel, keeping them from entering the unstable bank area until a permanent repair can be executed. The long term plan is to install a replacement concrete culvert to replace the crossing in the area. Additional coordination with state water board is required to minimize the impact of the area.
