Members of Team Travis listened to Lt. Col. [Retired] Richard Brenneman during the Golden Bear Dedication Ceremony at Travis Air Force Base, Calif on Sept. 16, 2005. New RAPCON facility opens

WWII Airman receives Purple Heart
Mr. Leo Bach talks with a group of young Airmen after a special ceremony held in his honor at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. Mr. Bach was presented the Purple Heart, the WWII Campaign Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European/African/Middle East Theater Medal with one bronze star, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with two broze stars and the Prisoner of War Medal at the event. On April 11, 1944 while on a bombing run destined for Cotbus, Germany, Lieutenant Bach and his B-17 aircrew was attacked and forced to evacuate the aircraft 50 miles south of Berlin, never reaching their target. He was captured April 13,1944, and held as a German Prisoner of War for one year, one month and one day at Stalag Luft One, Barth, Germany. He was liberated by the Soviet Army May 1, 1945 and evacuated to Camp Lucky Strike, Le Havre, France. Lieutenant Bach was honorably discharged Dec. 23, 1945. (US Air Force photo by Nan Wylie)
