BASH

Mr. Mike Bierman takes Sonjia out for a practice flight. During the long days of summer, the falconers must split the birds’ flight times between the morning and early evening. The World Bird Sanctuary has 14 birds assigned to Travis. There are a variety of species, including desert birds and even local species. The variety of birds allows the WBS to choose different birds for different seasons and climates. “It allows us to give some of the different birds a rest,” said Mr. Bierman. Mr. Bierman has been a part of the Travis BASH program for more than six years. He has been a falconer for more than 14. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Raymond Hoy)
