Robert Tharratt, former World War II prisoner of war, speaks to Airmen at Travis Air Force Base during a POW/MIA memorial event Sept. 19. Tharratt described in detail the day the B-17 Flying Fortress he was serving as ball-turret gunner, was shot down over Nuremberg, Germany. Ultimately, he spent more than seven months as a POW, which included a devastating 600-mile forced march. Tharratt, who helped save the life of an aircrew member before baling out, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross 55 years after the war. (U.S. Air Force photo/Ken Wright)
