As recently as the 1970's, women's history was virtually an unknown topic within the school curriculums or even in the general public consciousness. To address this situation, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women initiated a "Women's History Week" celebration during one week in March in 1978. In 1987, the National Women's History Project petitioned Congress to expand the national celebration to the entire month of March. Since then, the National Women's History Month Resolution has been approved with bipartisan support in both the House and Senate.

Throughout history, women have made significant contributions to the fine arts. Women have influenced our culture and the progression of literature, photography, music and much more. To honor the originality, beauty, imagination and multiple dimensions of women's lives, this month we will be incorporating Women's Art: Women's Vision as the 2008 theme for National Women's History Month. The history of women and art is quintessential women's history. It is the story of amazing accomplishments by women, acclaimed at the time but written out of history.

Join us in ensuring that their accomplishments are never forgotten. This year's theme provides a special opportunity to discover and celebrate women's visual arts in a variety of forms and media that help expand how we perceive ourselves and others. With the help of the Women's History Month Committee and the Travis Women's Council, we will be honoring these women and their contributions through the following fun and educational events and activities.
