  • Did you learn anything?

Some of my best memories growing up came from spending time on my grandparent’s farm in rural Indiana. In my eyes, my grandfather was the smartest guy on the planet. He could always explain how things worked and had the capability to fix or build anything. As a boy, whatever my grandfather was working on, I wanted to be there next to him doing the same thing
  • Be a glue person

A person can make an impact in an organization regardless of their position. Satisfaction and happiness do not have to originate from the top of an organization. I also believe that one person, regardless of their position, can start a ripple effect of happiness throughout the organization. Little changes often lead to big and permanent changes. So how does one make the change to choose happiness at work? There are a couple of steps I have learned over my 32 years of military service.
  • Innovation: our calling and imperative

“Our industry does not respect tradition—it only respects innovation.” Satya Nadella spoke after assuming the role as chief executive at Microsoft. Arguably, similar sentiments could be said of our U.S. Air Force. Seven decades ago, visionary innovators established our service as a separate, but equal, solution to the problems of the third and fourth dimensions of time and space. Since that day, the Air Force has demanded creativity, open-mindedness and calculated risk-taking.
  • Ready for this jelly

This week kicked off the 75th anniversary celebration of the establishment of Travis Air Force Base. Looking back 75 years, specifically on this day, February 9, 1943, the Battle of Guadalcanal had been won and the Allies claimed their victory. When the U.S. Marines landed on the island in 1942, they commenced the first major Allied offensive against Japanese-held positions in the Pacific. Were those Marines ready?
  • Doing enough

With my military career winding down, I routinely ask myself if I’ve done enough. To be honest, I am not sure. However, I am confident in my choices to maximize the opportunities presented before me. As this will be my last commentary submission, I will use it to ask you, “Have you seized or squandered life’s opportunities?”
  • This is our time

When standing in harm's way, do you want to be partially, mostly or fully ready to respond? Every day our friends, family and team of Airmen rely on us to be the best version of ourselves. Ask yourself if you have done everything you need to do for the person standing next to you or for your wingman?
  • Servant leadership and customer service are one

By joining the U.S. Air Force, we have committed ourselves to put “service before self.” By definition, we have answered an altruistic calling to serve others. This reflects servant leadership and customer service.
  • Today's subordinates are tomorrow's leaders

The front line supervisor and subordinate relationship is not just one of the most important relationships, it’s the foundation on which our subordinates’ development starts. How we catch and care for our Airmen, in my opinion, is the most critical step in their professional development.
  • Keeping warm

On Jan. 10, 2017, on a snowy morning in Knoxville, Tennessee, I was jostling through a crowd of young men who, like me, were being herded onto buses making their way to the airport to be flown to San Antonio for basic military training.
  • Give 'em hell

In July of this year, I became the command chief master sgt. for the 621st Contingency Response Wing. After five months, I am still in awe of the capabilities, rapid response and resilience of our people. I have had the unique opportunity to watch CRW Airmen at Travis Air Force Base, California, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., work seamlessly with host wing partners to build capable teams and respond to multiple crises. If this past hurricane season has taught me anything, it is that we are an unstoppable unified team.
