Recycling contest celebrates Earth Day 2010 Published March 25, 2010 By Dolores Tiburcio 60th CES Solid Waste Program manager TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE,Calif. -- To promote active recycling, the 60 Civil Engineer Squadron's Asset Management Flight Office is turning recyclable trash into a valuable commodity. From April 5 through April 30, the flight office will conduct its 12th annual Recycling Contest in conjunction with Travis' Earth Day 2010 program. This year's theme is "preserving the environment while protecting our freedom." The goal of the contest is to reduce solid waste as well as add money to booster clubs, households and schools. Additionally, the contest promotes awareness and a positive attitude toward recycling, according to Dolores Tiburcio, base recycling program manager. Squadrons may enter an unlimited number of teams, each with a maximum of 10 people (to include the captain). Military family housing, dorm residents and local Travis schools are also eligible to enter teams. Teams will collect and redeem California Redemption Value aluminum cans, plastic bottles (with No.1 or No.2 markings) and glass bottles including brown, green and clear bottles and jars. The current market is paying $1.57 per pound for aluminum cans, 93 cents per pound for polyethylene terephthalate plastic (No. 1 marking), 51 cents per pound for high density polyethylene (No.2 marking) and 10 cents per pound for CRV glass. Items may be redeemed at the Solano Buy-back Center located outside the Travis main gate at 2901 Industrial Court. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items redeemed are weighed and recorded on an official tally sheet. Team captains are responsible for submitting their tally sheets and receipts to the Asset Management Flight Office so the totals can be tracked through April 30 when the contest ends. The registration form below can be completed and faxed to 424-5105, (attention Sherry Cassidy), returned to the e-mail address on the form or hand-carried to the Asset Management Flight Office in bldg 570. Deadline to enter the contest is April 5 by close of business. The flight will award prizes to first - and second - place teams that recycle the most materials and those who turn in the highest dollar amount. The same criteria will be used for the highest individual awards. Prizes: First place teams (most weight and most money) Each team member receives: A radiant sphere desk clock, Earth Day T-shirt and grocery tote bag. Items are designed with Travis AFB logo and made from recycled material. Second Place Teams: (most weight and money) Each team member receives: A back pack, Earth Day T-shirt and grocery tote bag.
