Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Alcohol Awareness Month overview of scheduled events Published March 24, 2009 By Sexual Assault Response Coordinator TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- April is nationally recognized as both Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Alcohol Awareness Month as a way to raise awareness about and to promote prevention of sexual violence and alcohol abuse through special events and public education. The Department of Defense's theme for 2009 is "My Strength is for Defending." The theme is intended to highlight the fact that our mission not only involves national defense, but the defense and safety of the Americans who voluntarily risk their lives in our defense. Every servicemember, starting with senior leadership, must understand his or her duty to safely intervene and prevent the crime of sexual assault. Sexual assault degrades mission readiness and is fundamentally at odds with the responsibility of the men and women in uniform to treat all people with dignity and respect.
