To promote active recycling, the 60th Civil Engineer Squadron's Environmental Flight Office is turning recyclable trash into a valuable commodity.

Beginning March 21 and running through April 18, the Environmental Flight Office will conduct its tenth Annual Recycling Contest in honor of Travis' Earth Day '08 program.
The goal of the contest is to reduce solid waste, and to provide funds for booster clubs, households and schools. Also, the contest promotes awareness and a positive attitude toward recycling, according to Dolores Tiburcio, recycling program manager.

Squadrons may enter an unlimited number of teams, each with a maximum of 10 people (counting the captain). Military family housing/dorm residents and local Travis schools are also eligible to enter teams.

Teams will collect and redeem California Redemption Value aluminum cans, CRV plastic bottles with No. 1 or No. 2 markings, and scrap glass to include brown, green and clear bottles and jars. The current market is paying $1.56 per pound for aluminum cans; 90 cents per pound for polyethylene terephthalate plastic, with No. 1 marking; 52 cents per pound for high density polyethylene, number 2 marking; and 10 cents per pound for CRV glass.

Items may be redeemed at Solano Buy-back Center located outside the Travis Main gate at 2901 Industrial Court. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from
8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Once redeemed, items will be weighed and recorded on an official tally sheet. Team captains are responsible for submitting their tally sheets and receipts to the Environmental Flight Office so the totals can be tracked through April 18 when the contest ends.

The contest registration form can be completed and faxed to 424-5105 (attention Ms. Sherry Cassidy) returned to the e-mail address on the form or hand-carried to the Environmental Flight Office in Bldg. 570. Deadline to enter the contest is March 21 at close of business.

Prizes will be awarded to first and second place teams who recycle the most materials by weight, and those who turn in the highest dollar amount. The same criteria will be used for the highest individual awards.

Prizes:
First place teams (most weight and most money)
Each team member receives:
A radiant sphere desk clock, Earth Day T-shirt and grocery tote bag. Items are designed with Travis logo and made from recycled material.

Second place teams (weight and money)
Each team member receives:
A back pack, Earth Day T-shirt and grocery tote bag. Items are designed with Travis logo and made from recycled material.

The individual winner for most weight and for most money collected will win a $25 gift certificate donated by AAFES, a fanny pack with Earth Day logo, and an Earth Day T-shirt.

In addition to winning prizes, teams will have the option to keep the money they earn for their booster clubs or donate the money to a charitable organization.
