On Sept.17, an Airman from the 60th Civil Engineer Squadron was tried by a summary court-martial and pled guilty to one specification of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. The Airman was sentenced to four days confinement and reduced in rank by one stripe.

This case served as yet another reminder of how serious it is for someone to get behind the wheel of a car after he or she has been drinking. Driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be a problem here at Travis, and the punishments that are being given out reflect the gravity of the offense.

Based on individual circumstances, some squadron commanders are choosing to try their members suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol through a summary court-martial, rather than recommending non-judicial punishment under Article 15 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Make no mistake, drinking and driving is being taken seriously.

When you drink and drive, you not only put your own life at stake, but also the lives of those around you. If you have been drinking, please ask a sober wingman for a ride, call a taxi or AADD, or find some other safe way of getting home. Remember that we all need to work together to keep Travis Air Force Base and our local community safe.
