Motorcycle Safety Published Aug. 16, 2012 By 2nd Lt Jessica Clark 60 Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs 8/16/2012 - TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - -- School starts next week and with new traffic patterns and congested gate traffic, the safety of our Airmen and their families is of highest priority. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, motorcycles may travel faster than traffic during congested road conditions and can legally travel in the unused space between two lines of moving or stationary vehicles. This is commonly called lane splitting." Motorcycle operators take on a risk when they choose to lane split, even when at 25 miles per hour or less. Col Dwight Sones, 60th Air Mobility Wing Commander, has recently addressed this issue as unacceptable on Travis. "At this time, Travis base policy is that motorcycle riders will not lane split on the installation, which starts as drivers pass the Parker Road intersection on Air Base Parkway," Sones said. "If you witness this action on base, report it to the security forces law enforcement desk," According to Tech. Sgt. Joseph Guglielmi, 60th Security Forces Squadron, violators of the commander's policy can receive citations, points against your driver's license and repeat offenders can receive an Air Force Article 92. Motorists need to be more conscious of this practice. "If a motorist detects unsafe lane splitting, contacting other vehicles or high rate of speed, they are encouraged to take down a license plate number and description to report to law enforcement authorities," Gary Ash, 60th AMW Safety, said. "Motorists should never take it upon themselves to confront riders who drive between other motor vehicles. This may escalate to another problem known as road rage." Courtesy between all motorists is always encouraged, especially during the expected traffic delays on and around Travis, Ash said.
