Training gives parents tools: Those with special needs kids receive information, guidance Published Oct. 17, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Christopher Carranza 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. -- The Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted Specialized Training of Military Parents Tuesday and Wednesday at Travis Air Force Base. "STOMP is a non-profit organization that works in collaboration with the (Exceptional Family Member Program) to provide training opportunities and workshops to families and professionals," said Emily Batie, Joint Base Lewis-McChord Parent Education coordinator. "All members of the STOMP team are spouses of active duty or retired service members and have a child with special needs." The program provides access to services and creates a collaborative environment for family and professional partnerships. "The goal is to help parents with special need dependents become better informed advocates for their families," said Sylvia Crowder, 60th Force Support Squadron A&FRC Family Support coordinator. "The EFMP Family Support is located in the A&FRC and is an excellent resource for information, referrals and activities for families with special needs dependents." The training covered special education law, TRICARE and Enhanced Care Health Option, Individualized Education Plans and other resources that guide families with special needs children through multiple systems that are accessible to service members. "The training and information was extremely beneficial," said Vanessa Pearson, a STOMP participant. "It has given me many references and resources to turn to so that I can get the support my child needs for a fair education." The two-day event was available to any military family regardless of status, and any professional organization that assists military families. One parent traveled from Naval Air Station Leemore, California, because the station did not offer the training that Travis A&FRC provides. "This is something families and friends need to know about so they can get the group support that we all need," said Jamie Bunch, a STOMP participant. "Travis and the A&FRC are great at being the focal point for providing support meetings and play groups which help families and children."
