Christopher Carranza 60th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE,Calif. -- Since 1962, a proclamation signed by former President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that day falls as Police Week. This year's Police Week is May 11 to 17. According to policeweek.org, "Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world will converge on Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice." At Travis, the 60th Security Forces Squadron is the base security, police and defense force responsible for all personnel and property at Travis. "The 60th Security Forces Squadron wants to share our 'defender Culture' with the base population," said Master Sgt. David Hartman, 60th SFS NCO in charge of installation security. "National Police Week is a perfect opportunity for our defenders to focus on what it means to be Peace Officers, to enhance esprit de corps and honor our fallen defenders and Peace Officers." In honor of Police Week the 60th SFS will host the following events: · 7 - 8:30 a.m. May 12, at USO is scheduled to host will be the Peace Officers Prayer Breakfast. · 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 12, the Exchange is scheduled to display a weapons and equipment. · 1 - 4 p.m. May 13, Travis Bowl is scheduled to host a 9-pin bowling tournament. · 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. May 14, the fitness center red track is scheduled to host the Ultimate Fitness Challenge. · 8 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. May 15, combat arms firing range is scheduled to host the Tactical Shooting Challenge. · 4 - 4:30 p.m. May 16, wing headquarters is scheduled to host retreat ceremony. Additionally, May 16 and 17, the Travis Defenders Association and the Western States Police Canine Association is scheduled to host the 2014 Defenders K9 Trials A monetary donation from the event's proceeds will be sent to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
