The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West

The United States Air Force Band of the Golden West is stationed at Travis Air Force Base, California. As the only remaining active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, it is comprised of 60 talented musicians who perform throughout California, Idaho, Oregon, Nevada and Washington. The band supports nine active-duty AF wings, six AF Reserve Command wings, five recruiting squadrons and the communities within its 527,000 square mile geographic area of responsibility. The band has performed for gubernatorial inaugurations, with guest artists such as Bob Hope and for fans of the Oakland, Sacramento and San Francisco professional sports teams. It has been seen and heard by thousands. The band was honored to lead off the 1997, 2000 and 2003 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parades.
The organization offers 9 performing groups; the Ceremonial/Marching Band, the Concert Band, the Commanders Jazz ensemble, the Mobility popular music group, the Pacific Coast Winds chamber music ensemble, the Travis Brass quintet, the Golden West Winds Woodwind quintet, the Delta Winds quintet and the Fuerza Musical Latin pop group.
The musicians within the organization are also highly educated, the majority holding bachelors or masters degrees. In addition to their musical abilities, the band relies on its members’ extensive talents to run the organization’s operations, media relations, library and other necessary administrative functions.
Bands have a great history here at Travis Air Force Base. The original band traces its roots to 1959 when it was the Air Force component of the famed NORAD Command Band. Since that time, it was known as the Band of the Golden Gate, and America’s Band in Blue. That organization was deactivated in 1994 when the 15th Air Force Band of the Golden West stationed at March Air Force Base, California was moved to Travis. Today the 60 member group continues to maintain its rich tradition of musical excellence and outstanding Air Force professionalism in nearly 300 annual performances.
