OT019 - Grazing Management Units 7&8

Grazing Management Units (GMU) 7 and 8 consist of gently sloping grassy pastures that were originally part of the former Fairfield Air Force Station, a decommissioned Atomic Energy Commission facility. They comprise about 37 acres in a relatively undeveloped portion of Travis AFB. They had been used by the Travis Saddle Club to graze and exercise horses, although this use has been discontinued at GMU 7. There have been three instances in the mid-1980's in which horses that grazed in these GMUs became ill with temporary edema of the lower torso and legs. In each case, the symptoms apparently disappeared within a few days after removal of the horses from the GMUs. The cause of these illnesses has never been determined.

The West/Annexes/Basewide Operable Unit (WABOU) Remedial Investigation report did not identify any soil or groundwater contaminants that would require a cleanup action. The WABOU Soil ROD documented the closure of the site.
