David Grant USAF Medical Center - Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at  David Grant USAF Medical Center is a fully accredited radiology residency and currently have 12 active duty Air Force physician residents in our program. The individual class size ranges from two to four residents per year. Applicants apply through a centralized process coordinated by the Air Force Personnel Center's Physician Education section at Randolph AFB, TX.

Qualified applicants must be active duty members of the Air Force or in an Air Force medical training program, and selection is made through a tri-service selection board which convenes each Fall. Our program selects new residents from active duty field officer and HPSP/USUHS medical student candidate pools. Medical students are pre-selected for Radiology and must perform an internship at DGMC prior to beginning their Radiology residency at the PGY-2 level.

Our department provides inpatient and outpatient imaging services in all modalities to patients who are eligible for care, including active duty military, eligible dependents, VA beneficiaries, and retirees. We provide and interpret radiographs, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, and MRI, and also provide both diagnostic and therapeutic services in Nuclear Medicine and Vascular & Interventional Radiology. We also provide teleradiology services in plain film and ultrasound interpretation for up to 15 outside facilities, as well as cross-sectional interpretations for forward-deployed locations.

We average 16 full-time board certified staff radiologists. Approximately 50 percent of our staff have subspecialty training in the areas of Neuroradiology, Breast Imaging, Abdominal Imaging, Musculoskeletal Radiology, Pediatric Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Interventional Radiology. Many staff are co-faculty with UC Davis Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

We offer advanced breast and cardiac MRI services. We are constantly working to upgrade our equipment, and currently utilize modern 1.5T and 3T MRI systems. We also have a permanent on-site PET/CT scanner and a new 128-slice dual-source CT scanner for cardiac imaging.

We offer state-of-the-art 3D ultrasound, digital radiography, and breast tomosynthesis. For additional experience in Pediatric Radiology and ER trauma, our residents spend three to four months in Pediatric Radiology at the Children's Hospital of Oakland and one month at UC Davis Medical Center in ER trauma radiology. We also fund residents to attend the four-week American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP) course in Washington D.C. during the latter half of their residency.

Our main focus is on resident education, including quality teaching, patient care, process improvement, and research. Program faculty have extensive clinical and academic experience, with several serving as invited faculty at national radiology conferences annually.

Air Force Graduate Medical Education programs, including those at DGMC, prepare physicians to pass their specialty boards at higher than the national pass rate.

Resident academic curriculum and responsibilities, work hours, and on-call duties as well as faculty teaching responsibilities are in full compliance with established Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Residency Review Committee (RRC) guidelines. DGMC's Diagnostic Radiology program has full accreditation by the ACGME.
