Building 905
Soil Cleanup Action at Site SS041
Site SS041 consists of two components: Building 905 and the Cypress Lakes Golf Course Annex. The golf course is located about 2.5 miles north of Travis AFB and contains a maintenance yard that had pesticide contamination in the surface soil. Groundwater was not impacted by Annex activities. In 2000. the Air Force excavated the contaminated soil at the Annex and transported it to a licensed disposal facility. Because the soil cleanup achieved residential cleanup standards, the West/Annexes/Basewide Operable Unit Soil Record of Decision selected no further action for the Annex.
Building 905 is the Entomology Shop that has been used to mix and store pesticides and herbicides. The site has an outdoor concrete wash-rack that was once used to wash pesticide applicator vehicles. The topsoil surrounding the wash-rack contained a variety of chlorinated pesticides that could have been a source of potential human health risk. The groundwater beneath the shop contained low concentrations of pesticides.
The Air Force used an extraction well as a part of an interim remedy to lower the pesticide concentrations in the groundwater to below the detection level. Because the interim action achieved all cleanup standards, the Travis AFB Groundwater Record of Decision selected no further action as the final remedy. Also, the West/Annexes/Basewide Operable Unit Soil Record of Decision selected excavation as the final soil remedy for Building 905. The Air Force excavated the contaminated soil and placed it in the Corrective Action Management Unit during the summer of 2003. The soil cleanup action achieved residential cleanup levels, so there are no Land Use Controls required at this site. Since all media of concern have addressed, Site SS041 is closed.
