SD034 - Building 811




Building 811

Building 811 (SD034) is located in the northwestern portion of the North/East/West Industrial Operable Unit and has an indoor wash-rack that is used to wash, strip, and treat aircraft parts prior to painting. Wastewater from the wash-rack flows into an oil/water separator (OWS) that directs it into either the sanitary sewer or a concrete-lined overflow pond located west of the building. In 1994, the existing OWS was removed and replaced after a hole was discovered in it. The primary groundwater contaminants at the site include trichloroethene, 1,2-DCE, and Stoddard solvent (a petroleum distillate). These contaminants may be a source of potential human health risks. Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons are the only soil contaminants at the site.

Based on human health and ecological assessments of the potential risks posed by the contaminants, the Travis AFB Groundwater Record of Decision selected Passive Skimming and Enhanced Attenuation for the groundwater, and the North/East/West Industrial Operable Unit Soil, Sediment, and Surface Water Record of Decision selected No Action for the soil at this site.  The passive skimming will address the floating Stoddard solvent, and the Enhanced Attenuation will address the dissolved solvent plume.  The Site SD034 attenuation monitoring network was established in 2015, and monitoring of the final groundwater remedy is ongoing.

In 2016, the base initiated a technology demonstration to evaluate the effectiveness of using oxygen to enhance aerobic biodegradation of petroleum contaminants (Stoddard solvent) in groundwater.  This technology demonstration will also support a comparative analysis of aerobic versus anaerobic biodegradation of petroleum contaminants in groundwater to determine which approach is more cost-effective and sustainable.  The Site SD034 technology demonstration will be performed over a period of about two to three years and is expected to end by 2019.
