The Jet Fuel Spill Area (SS014) is located along the jet fuel distribution pipeline in the southwestern industrial portion of the base. It consists of five distinct spill areas, three of which were determined in 2010 to require no further investigation or action. Soil and groundwater have been significantly impacted by petroleum contamination at the two other locations (Subsites 1 and 3).
Passive product skimmers were used to remove floating free product from Subsite 1 until the floating product was no longer accumulating. Monitored Natural Attenuation was selected as the final groundwater remedy for Subsites 1 and 3. Petroleum contaminants in soil are expected to naturally attenuate. Groundwater monitoring is ongoing.
A technology demonstration to evaluate the effectiveness of using sulfate to enhance the biodegradation of petroleum contaminants in groundwater was started in 2016. The technology demonstration consists of the construction and monitoring of a bioreactor filled with gypsum (a sulfate source) to establish anaerobic conditions needed to promote the breakdown of petroleum contaminants.
