ST032 - Monitoring Well 246

Field in Vicinity of Monitoring Well 246

Site ST032, which was identified with Monitoring Well 246 site, is located in the eastern portion of the base.  It consists of grassy fields surrounded by a runway, taxiways, and the aircraft parking apron.  Two distinct groundwater zones were identified at the site.  The first zone contained fuel product floating on the groundwater, and a passive product skimmer was used to remove the floating product from the plume. The second zone is co-mingled dissolved fuel in groundwater with TCE from the eastern portion of the SS016 plume. Past leakage from an underground jet fuel line is the suspected cause of fuel contamination in Site ST032 soil and groundwater.  Remedial actions at Site SS016 have contained the TCE plume, and TCE is no longer detected in ST032 groundwater.  Because groundwater contamination consisted of only petroleum constituents, Site ST032 was transferred to the Petroleum-Only Contamination (POCO) program in 2009.

Soil, soil gas, and groundwater samples were collected and analyzed in 2015 during a data gap investigation to assess current site risks.  Analytical results indicate that chemical concentrations in all media meet requirements for site closure with land use controls (LUCs) under the Low-Threat Underground Storage Tank Case Closure Policy.  The Air Force anticipates closing Site ST032 in 2017.  LUCs will be implemented in the portion of Site ST032 where benzene concentrations in subsurface soil pose a potential future risk to residents and workers if the subsurface soil is exposed.
