Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
As part of the 60th Dental Squadron, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Department at David Grant Medical Center helps ensure the dental readiness of all active duty personnel at Travis AFB. As one of two USAF Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency programs, the clinic is also tasked with training new oral and maxillofacial surgeons.
The 11 residents work under the direct supervision of five board-certified surgeons with diverse educational backgrounds: three are graduates of the DGMC residency, two were trained in civilian oral surgery programs, one has additional fellowship training in Facial Cosmetic Surgery and one is a dual-degree MD/DDS surgeon.
In support of the squadron’s mission, the OMS Flight provides full-scope oral surgery services for active duty personnel and reservists on active orders. Additionally, to support the training of residents, the department has special authorization to provide certain services to non-active duty beneficiaries which would otherwise not be available. Therefore, it must be understood that all treatment, without exception, is provided by resident trainees under the supervision of staff surgeons.
With a referral from a civilian dentist the department can usually provide:
• Dental extractions including wisdom teeth
• Placement of dental implants (restoration of implants is by the patient’s civilian dentist at patient’s expense)
• Bone grafting/gum surgery for dental rehabilitation
• Biopsies
• Facial cosmetic surgery (charges apply)
• Trauma care
• and more!
